ISTE Esssential Conditions

One tool you could use to assess your school district's technology plan is the ISTE Essential Conditions and use their diagnostic tool to complete the assessment.

ISTE Diagnostic Tool

Once you have located your school district or supervisory union's technology plan, and after you finish the diagnostic tool assessment, print your results so you can analyze where there is room for improvement in the plan.

For instance, if you scored low in the Skilled Personnel section of the essential conditions assessment, which states "educators, support staff and other leaders are skilled in the selection and effective use of appropriate ICT (Information and Communication Technology), that may indicate a real need in your district for more hands-on training and use of technology and instruction related programs for teachers, support staff and admin (or those people who will use the technology).

If your district scores in the 50's range (out of 100), then it seems your technology plan is really in the upper end of the approaching stage and moving towards meeting the ISTE Essential Conditions.    As an example, scoring a 59/100 in Technical Support where "educators and students have access to reliable assistance for maintaining, renewing and using ICT and digital learning resources" shows that your district values keeping technology up and running, so that the users can access what they need.

A valuable tool and one the technology committee in your district/su should be using as a basis for formulating their educational technology plan.
